What's the best console generation in your opinion so far? Why?
What's your birth year?
>>
Is it considered retro to like 6th gen?
>>
>>323022517

4th generation > 5th generation > 3rd generation > 6th generation >>> the rest
>>
>>323022517
In terms of features and shit? Wii U. I feel like if Nintendo hadn't been so fucking conservative on power, kept up with the graphical capabilities of their competition, and had marketed it better it could be in the position that the PS4 is in right now, outselling the other two. As it is, Nintendo is retarded and will probably never do anything right ever again.

It's not /vr/ to argue if 6th generation is retro.
>>
>>323023309
IBM PC went good since 1990s. Earlier other PCs were better.

5tg gen was a huge step foward to the videogames in general.
1990
>>
4th > 3rd > 5th > 6th > the rest

a console used to be more than a pc clone
>>
>>323024184
I forgot to add:
I dot't think so. The word retro reffers to someting from the past that seems to be antiquated.
>>

the PS2 gen.
>wide variety of videogames.
>lot of experimental stuff.
>cheap used games
>cheaper less good games
>good cases that don't instantly break like PS1
>lots of japanese games

I love the PS2 but i guess you could tell from my arguments.

Current gen
Any other question is objectively wrong
Developers got better, technologies got better, literally everything is better.

Gen 4.
1990.
>>
Sixth gen. It has the largest quantity of god-tier games across all genres, it brought online to the console plebs, and it brought an actual 3rd competitor in the home console market.

Born 1989

1969.

Playstation 1 was when it peaked, PS2 was when the big problems started.

Born in 87, probably consider the 5th generation followed closely by the 4th as the best.

6th gen

dreamcast
ps2
gamecube
og xbox

find me a gen with a better list of consoles, i dare you

The GCN/PS2/XBOX gen.

It was the last time video games were just video games. Before they went on to be over commercialized and all the problems of the modern generation came in. Plus I would say most of the groundbreaking games of the post-2D era came out that gen.

Born in 91. Really like the Dreamcast

>>
born in 88 so I've seen most of them

been a pc gamer mostly but the best console gen for me was 6th by far, every console had loads of fun games, online was just first really taking off, etc.

my highschool was pretty much entirely spent at a local gamestore/console lan center playing halo 2 with friends
>>
>>323026029
i hate that it feels like there just aren't many games comming out these days.
like yes, a ton of indie shit.
and the handful of triple A games every year.
but man the PS2 had so many fucking games a lot of wich were good and in the mean time nintendo was also making their fans happy with good nintendo games on gamecube.
Xbox obviously had better multiplats and also some really good exclusives.
i wish videogames wouldnt take so fucking long to make or more studios released videogames.
i dont even exactly know what the reason is.
Do indie devs just not have the budget to make a proper videogame? is that why they rely so much on muh 8 bit muh 16 bit?

5th gen, because it was the last time that Nintendo and Sony were both publishing amazing games and new IPs at breakneck speed. It was also the last time Nintendo had great 3rd party support (Rare etc) and the PS's JRPGs were of such high quality.

This gen is absolute shit in comparison, it's quite saddening really.

they pump so much money into videogames that they have to have mass market appeal and have to be fun for everybody.
wich ruins it for "hardcore" gamers that rather would have something new and experimental instead of the same AAA shit every year.
>>
What are generations? My PC just plays all the games I've bought over the years.
>>
1989
Out of all the consoles I probably appreciate the PSX/PS2 the most. I still play games on my PS2 to this day.
>>
my fondest memories are of Gen 5
overall best is Gen 6
consoles were strong enough to produce nice looking visuals
while being weak enough to force devs to be creative and not go the AAA cinematic muh realism route
>>
>>323026869
It's got nothing to do with nostalgia. I've played many games years after they originally had been released. Games just used to be better, generally speaking.
>>
>>323022517
n64 or original xbox..easy
both have games with the most replay value and gfx for their time

It's funny how people have such different views. Both of those consoles were the worst of their generation, imo.

OG Xbox, Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube were all perfect, had a unique flavour of games and consequently each one was worth owning with little overlap.

The XBox was my Halo 1&2 multiplayer machine too. Don't get me wrong, it was alright. I just consider it the most boring console out of the four. The PS2 at least had Contra: SS. That's one of my favorite games ever. I still preferred the DC and GC over the PS2 though.

Xbox Hueg gets quite annoyingly (but understandingly) dismissed as just being halo and PC games

Phantom Dust, Mechassault, Voodoo Vince, Otogi were all classic exclusives and stuff like PGR, Shenmue and JSRF felt like a beautiful swan song for Sega

great modding scene as well
>>
1990
I feel that PS1 and N64 were really the best of the best and the quality of actual 'games' defined by pure gameplay declined with the Xbox/PS2/GC. This was when gameplay started going out the window for 'muh feels' and 'muh cinematics', graphics took place of gameplay, and writing took place of fun.

Ironically, my favorite console was the Gamecube, but I think it's because I was 11 or whatever and saved up birthday money and sold my shit to afford one of my own. I didn't even have a game for the first couple weeks and played with the menu since I sold my PS1 and all ~50 games for it.

I miss my Sega Genesis fighting games and sidescrollers though. Some of the hardest games of all time from what I remember.

Pretty much agreed. Wow and only three posts in.
>>
>>323024690
I agree with all of this. The 6th generation is the best. It was also the last generation where there were a large number of AA, "middle market" games, as opposed to the current "AAA or indie" dichotomy.

And don't forget that the PS2 was backwards compatible with the PS1. Coincidentally, the 5th generation was the second-best generation.
>>
>>323026517
>Do indie devs just not have the budget to make a proper videogame? is that why they rely so much on muh 8 bit muh 16 bit?

I think it has more to do with them wanting to make games that are "artsy" or "quirky" instead of just making normal games with a smaller team and budget. "Indie" should just be an adjective, but it's become a genre.
>>
>>323027505
Good point. I honestly wouldn't mind if the industry just collectively decided to lock graphics at the PS2 level and devote all the extra resources to gameplay improvements. It would never happen, but it's fun to dream.
>>
Best gen was 5th gen because it had the best games. I was born in 1998.

4th, but 5th and 3rd were also glorious.
After these PC games got much better in my opinion.

I was born in 1999
>>
>>323030812
I think this is partially true, but it depends on the studio. If it's something like 3 people making a game it's way easier/less time consuming to use less detailed sprites so that's why a lot of small teams will go for retro graphics. That and 2D retro styled games will have less bugs and be easier to code.
Though definitely when people think "indie game" they think of 8/16-bit style graphics (well more like faux 8/16-bit, they're actually not), though people are getting sick off this shit nowadays.

either 4th or 5th gen.

'fraid not but theres so much good case mods out there

my guilty pleasures are the ones that go too fucking far like this one
>>
>>323033147
I'm not even really talking about the graphics. I don't really care about graphics that much - I just got into Neverwinter Nights about a year ago, and that game's graphics weren't even good for their time. I'm talking about the gameplay. If indie devs were reviving the space sim, car combat, or futuristic racer genres, or making RPGs like NWN with awesome and easy-to-use modding tools, I wouldn't care if the graphics weren't very good. But they're not doing that. They're making puzzle platformers and shit, or trying too hard to be wacky and funny.

Sixth gen was absolutely the best one. Every console was great, PC was great, the GBA was great.
>>
>>323028432
Wow that looks gorgeous.
>>
I believe 4th and 6th are the greatest. In my opinion, they're the pinnacle of 2D and 3D game design respectively. I find 5th gen to be a happy medium between those two, with consoles showing some creative experimentation in utilizing new 3D technologies at the time, and 2D handheld gaming becoming more refined. If I had to pick a favorite though, I'd have to say 4th from having a more positive experience with its games. Born in _'97
>>
>>323022517

6th Gen, 1995.
>>
>>323035045
5th gen was the growing pains of moving into 3D, and eventually came into its own with some great games. By the 6th gen, they knew what they were doing with 3D, so they refined it and made the best games of any generation.

Everything after that mostly sucks.
>>
>>323022517

1990

Probably n64 or Xbox. Both had really good shooters before that genre went to shit and a good variety of good games.
>>
>>323035402
Agreed. Another thing I find remarkable about the 6th gen was how single-player, local multiplayer and online multiplayer games coexisted in balance; there wasn't any distinct dominance between those features in games. Now you have online reigning dominance over single-player almost entirely and local being basically waned off of it's existence.

I like the 4th gen the most. Everything was mainly drawn by hand, and it was great.
The next comes the 3rd generation, NES/Famicom gave us a plenty of greatest games, and NES was the first truly worldwide console.
The other comes below.
1997
>>
90s DOS / early Windows era is the best.

I don't know what gen that is, because I don't give a shit about consoles.
>>
>>323026517
>Do indie devs just not have the budget to make a proper videogame? is that why they rely so much on muh 8 bit muh 16 bit?

Indie devs don't have any artistic talent and don't respect people who do. They think artists should work for free to "add to their portfolio" and the artists rightfully tell them to fuck off and they get hired by real studios

So indies end up with terribly-drawn pixel shit.
>>
6th because the ps2 literally has more great games alone than every console from the 7th and 8th gen combined

PC because it is still relevant and has stood the sands of time.
>>
>>323044205
True, it's hard to name even five games from every gen since then.
Meanwhile, even if a lot of the games are hated now, PS2 and GC had a ton of great titles.
>>
>>323022517
1991
I can't say which is my favorite cause there are too many gems in every generation. Favorite game is DKC2 but my top 5 games are mostly from different generations.

DKC2-SNES
Hitman Blood Money - PC, 360
Ninja Gaiden 2 - 360
Conkers BFD - N64
DMC4SE - PS4
