I'm going to make a 2D platformer that will look like the ones from the SNES days. Except I'm not really creative with main characters so I'm thinking of using some artist's fursona as the MC. (Just the looks)

Ask for permission at least and if that is out of reach, just do a rip off version of the character, dont straight up copy them.

If its free you might be able to get away with it though as long as you credit the original artist and/or release it somewhere out there instead of in big places on Steam.
Alternatively, you could just ask the artist for permission to use his/her characters and see what happens. You might even be allowed to sell the game.
