How does one cheat a lock? I cheated terminals because I was never assed enough to learn how to do them properly. How do they work anyway?
Anyone else sick of these? It seems like almost all terminals are locked. I might just be sick of them because I played NV again a few weeks before F4 came out. I might get that easy hacking mod just to make them retardedly easy and get them out of the way.

TILES having zero means the word can't end with S which automatically brings you down to 5 options. Add on your 2 other incorrect attempts and you are down to 3 options.

PAINT having 0 eliminates both MEANT (Both N and T) and THANK (N) leaving only FETCH...

You have many possible words, pick one and on the right hand side it will list the word and matching letters. The matching letters indicate how many letters at any given place are in the password.
Say the password is "fetch" in OPs example, they are trying to find words with the minimum or maximum matches (or likeness)

WATER
The only word that shares characters in the same place is water where the T in both words align. This can be useful say if many words end in "ing" as you'll either get 3 or won't get 3 which tells you a great deal about the answer.
Failing that, there are brackets and symbols that when hovered over, will match to a closing symbol of the same type on the same line, this removes dud passwords, gives you more guesses, etc.
This is how you do hacking in fallout. it's super easy.
