Stores don't buy the games from the company at MSRP. They buy it for less.
Example. GAME costs $40.
STORE buys GAME from COMPANY for $30.
STORE then makes PROFIT from selling GAME, but not much PROFIT.
This is why some stores would rather you buy the game USED. When it's USED, they keep ALL the PROFIT for themselves.
So when GAME is on SALE and it's NEW, STORE makes less or no PROFIT, because THEY (usually) had to mark down the game themselves.

The irony is, many people who pirate niche JRPGs will also run out and pay full price for the latest Assassins Creed, Halo or Pokemon game. Its a pretty 50/50 split on liking or hating them. I personally think its a bad decision because half the people who play the game have a good chance to be turned off by dialects.
Basically, in the short run, it generated some fans. Mostly for Yangus in Dragon Quest VIII. But in the long run, it will turn off more people and limit how popular the series can become. And even many people who liked Yangus in Dragon Quest VIII for his accent hated Bianca in Dragon Quest V with the exact same accent. They're not going to remake the entire game engine into 2D for a port. If they did, they would have done it on consoles (or used the engine for Dragon Quest X).
Also, DQVIII is one of the best looking PS2 games without question. But it still was only 512i with no widescreen or AA. The only way it looks 'good' now is if you play it on an emulator at 3x AA.
If you don't like the downscaled graphics, then don't buy the game. But bitching about it online won't reach Yuji Horii's ears. And not buying it on 3DS doesn't get us closer to a true HD Remake.
