Same as Advance Wars: gameplay wasn't quite as exciting (or AC-tier casual) enough to attract a large audience, and that artstyle certainly didn't help. Especially in Japan.
Fire Emblem suffered the same fate for decades until they caught up via 100% weeaboo pandering and taking over Smash Bros.
