I never said you had to, but it's the logical thing to do if you are using a suppressor since no matter what, if you don't use sub-sonic ammo, you're going to have a super sonic crack which entirely defeats the purpose to using a suppressor.
And in a few games, names escape me, they do mention the use of sub-sonic ammo.

not really. if someone is getting shot at the supersonic crack or lack of a supersonic crack won't matter. they will hear the bullet whiz by and hear an impact if it hits something. the supersonic crack also does not reveal the location of the shot, merely that the bullet is supersonic.
