Reeks of shallow cash grab. Some very myopic people getting together to figure out what is cool and hip right now, seeing how huge idols were in Japan at the time, and running with that. Fire Emblem fans are nonplussed, SMT fans are unimpressed, and big surprise to no one intelligent, the idol tsunami rolled over eventually. Sure they're still popular as hell, but not as much as two or three years ago.

Considering the game is already niche in that it asked for gaming experience with two different JRPG franchises on top of being otaku-targeted idolshit, the people who would buy this game are type who notice details, obsess over them, and loathe changes, especially when those changes are to their waifus. This outfit was also shown off in a lot of advertising material, then silently altered, which would outrage waifu-loving otaku, the primary audience of an idol game. After all, what are idols if not waifus? On top of this, while I don't have the infographic saved, if I remember right Kiria was the most popular character by far, so the backlash to an outfit change for her is entirely possible.
