Buy a decent i5 Asus laptop with a 940 2GB video and 4 GB ram thinking it will run most of games well.

Find out that most games are running pretty slow on the laptop, even with settings set to low.

Find out that the fucking Intel is just using dualcores on i5 and i7 on laptops.

The only real quadcore i5 and i7 laptops are the super overpriced shit like Razor, ROG and MSI.

I'm fucked arent I?

You're definitely doing SOMETHING wrong, since even my 4yo i3 + 540M can run most games decently.

CPU really does not matter that much in most games. If anything, it's your low-end GPU, combined with probably too high settings in games, that is causing you issues.

Also make sure that the Nvidia Optimus system is NOT running your games with the integrated Intel HD graphics chip! This is the most common mistake / reason why modern laptop gamers are having poor framerates. Use the High Performance power mode, and check that the drivers are up to date.

Stick to 720p, no matter what your screen resolution is.

If you have the money to throw around go for it, just don't expect a good value and be ready to replace it with a new one every few years.

I mean, all in all it should be fine for driving low performance games/"high end" games from a few years back@medium-ish settings. Which honestly, with a laptop with that spec sheet is really all you should've been trying to run to begin with.

The CPU isn't nearly as much of a bottleneck as you think it is, it's mostly the GPU and the fact that it's all driving a 1920x1080 display.

assuming you go with Intel + Nvidia laptops, the modern ones have pretty decent cooling, and unless you really mistreat the machine (don't clean up the dust, throw it around...), they should last for years.

I grabbed a dirt-cheap, used Asus G60vs back in 2009, and it's still running well. I even upgraded its CPU to almost a gigahertz stronger model and repasted the GPU as well. Can still run just about anything, but not on the high settings.

>>
I feel like heat and power are the two biggest flaws of laptops. But they're perfect for productivity and light gaming/emulation. You might be dissapointed trying to use it as a modern gaming machine. I use mine primarily as a mobile music production rig. And even then the CPU usage and heat gets a bit too high.
Better off with a good tablet.
>>
Intel CPUs with the U on the end are for ultra low power situations. Probably ~65% of the per-core performance of an identically numbered mobile CPU with an M at the end instead, and less than half the wattage required. They're mostly for ultrabooks, where the slim design means a smaller battery and more concern for power consumption. Not a gaming laptop.
