It goes well beyond the forsaken though.
Orcs, Trolls and Tauren seem to work ok because of cultural familiarity and their good relations in the WC games, same for Humans, high elves and Dwarves.
Night Elves should not be on the alliance, they hate high elves, they don't trust humans, they don't trust Dwarves. These are all magic using races and were all pretty much incompatible with night elf culture as it was presented in WC III.
The only race that would probably have an ok relationship with night elves would be Tauren, but of course, their friendliness with orcs really would place a damper on this.
Everything wrong with the forsaken in the horde is met with the same issues with night elves in the alliance.
The Blood elves are already known for being forced down the hordes throat because they hate orcs and trolls and the Draenei have no lore anyway but since they were built from the ground up to be "alliancey" I guess you can't argue against them.
Essentially, if the game was factoring past wars and racism the Forsaken would have few allies, the blood elves would have few allies and the night elves would have few allies. They just wouldn't be in the Horde or the Alliance.

Nonsensical retconn occurred where Orcs were originally brown (grey or white as well, depending on the region they lived in) before contact with the legion.

Well apparently if Fel is used as nerve gas the Draenei degenerate into Broken which then further degenerate into the Lost ones (classic Draenei from WC III like Akama) rather than become Eredar.

It all came down to the fact that the Night Elves and undead were two really big leftovers from the WC3 storyline that had no place becoming a third faction and at the same time were popular enough and had a big enough presence where you needed to them do be playable.
More then any of those races feeling "wrong" it's just about which felt less wrong to be in one of the two factions. Nelfs wouldn't join the Horde so they joined the "nice guy" team and likewise Forsaken got Horde because they're the leftovers.

Also if there's one thing the trailers for tis Warcraft movie has shown me, it's that the game's aesthetics do not translate well into live action at all. Half of the stuff looks really bad, and not just because of the awkward CGI.
