Unsurprising this news hasn't been discussed here, the shilling is strong.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-playstation-4-hack-confirmed-watch-the-linux-demo

So, basically, the PS4 has been hacked and the hackers themselves said that PS4's security is so shitty everyone can hack one.
Plus it seems Linux can be installed on it, even more easily than on a PS3, exactly because the PS4 is more similar to an actual PC, as the hacker explained.

This virtually allows to install SteamOS in a PS4, making it a Steam machine. And of course this will allow easier piracy and, some years from now, emulation.

Thoughts? Inb4

Not likely to be possible because AMD won't release drivers and the PS4 is unlikely to have support added in Windows to run in its non-standard environment. Its like a PC but its not a PC. Linux will work because its open source nature allows additions by interested third parties and it has drivers for AMD graphics hardware that aren't entirely under AMD's control.

It's not the same to run a PS2 game on a PS4 than to emulate a PS2 on the PS4 to run a PS2 game.

Try to use a PS2 emulator on a system with the specs the PS4 has and then, after the CPU shits itself, come back and tell me how it went.

Millions of psx and ps2 consoles got sold like hotcakes once the chip/swap shenanigans became affordable or easily doable. Millions of stingy parents won't make a move unless they hear about Free Pirated Games. Yeah, Sony wins. Devs lose.
>>
- This method of hacking uses a webkit exploit that's only in very early firmwares of the PS4 and has already been fixed in firmware updates.
- Installing linux is more just a "show we can do it" thing. It's not something they're doing because they think Linux on PS4 is super useful or anything.
- This does not mean piracy is happening. If you wanted to pirate PS4 games you'd need to stay in PS4 mode, which means all kinds of things that the Linux running doesn't have to deal with.
- This does not mean the PS4 is capable of playing every PC game suddenly. I mean you could probably try running anything that runs on Linux on it while Linux is installed on it, but chances are that shit ain't going to work unless the game is hyper simple and that's not any games that you're going to care about enough to buy a PS4 and install fucking linux through an early firmware-only exploit for.
- This does not mean the PS4 is upgradable. It's not modular in the same way a PC is. Removing hardware and adding new hardware isn't as easy as just plugging them in like with PC parts.

They still need to get the kernel level piece of the graphics drivers working, but that should be possible. Once that support is enabled in Radeon (the kernel level driver) Mesa's RadeonSI support should work with it. >>
>>322612828
the point of hacking a sony handheld was always emulation anyways and for that the hardware is fine, what is really shitty is the storage format
>>
In the future it might be possible to run windows through a VM maybe even with GPU pass-through for native graphical performance. You need two GPUs if you intend to use both OSes at the same time but if you only need one at a time I think you could run linux "headless" acting as the VM/hypervisor and give the GPU to windows. When you shutdown windows it should restore the GPU to the hypervisor(linux) I believe.

Because the PS3 initially actually allowed you to run Linux so there wasn't much point to hacking the system. The problem was that you didn't get access to the graphics hardware so you were stuck with VESA mode which sucked. Some users figured out how to access the graphics hardware and Sony freaked out and locked Linux out. It was hacked shortly thereafter.

Well they ported games last year from ps3 to 360 despite the architecture being so different. Stuff like ass creeds, dark souls 1 n 2, dmc, mass effect 2 and 3, etc etc. They would not have done it if there was literally no money in it. Someone has to be buying the games for them to continue as if everyone was fully pirating it, thew few sales wouldn't be worth the effort period since there would be no profit.

OP is right.
The fact there are no threads about this shows /v/ is filled with Sony fanboys. Just look at the posts ITT defending Sony, if that's not clear enough.

Meanwhile a thread about a Nintendo console being hacked would be way more active and full of shitposters.
>>
I don't get why Sony doesn't just take this idea and run with it. Not the exploit but getting other OSes to run on the PS4. Windows would immediately open up a large amount of games for the platform, Linux isn't too useful for games but vulkan might help improve things in the future.

>Cry me a river, fanboys
so are your conspiracy theories and your sad insecurities and hate

Plenty of threads have been made of this already

But no one really cares since this leads to nowhere in the near future. On the other hand, 3DS actually got breached, but it's still to much work for me to bother.

Spam these threads again when in 8 years I can actually pirate games on my PS4, and come back in 15 years when we get a useful emulator

Early PS3 models had linux support.

Publishers didn't like it and sony removed linux support on their system via an update in one of the most anti-consumerists moves of the entire history of vidya.
>>
>>322615435
But why do you care though?

Genuinely curious.
>>
>>322615683

Didn't he piggyback off another hack? I think Cturt found the first one and have hints and then this guy used the hints to find it and now can likely view all the exploits the ps4 has and sees all the holes. Course he's not gonna give it out.
>>
>>322615435

Because this hack literally means nothing until we can pirate games. If you have a 1.76 (which barely anyone does) all you can do is install linux which isn't even up properly and you won't be able to play newer releases cause of 1.76. What's the point?
>>

omgwut?

anon do you thing there is a pre-made list by sony that can be viewed?

On one hand, I'm impressed and glad.

On the other I'm worried. Since the more hardcore audience is more aware of piracy option, this might result in the more niche releases being pirated more like what happened with R4DS.
Hopefully this won't be the case, I'd hate to see only generic AAA schlock sell.

My fucking sides. Karama's a bitch ain't it Mr. PC MASTER RACE?
>>

I think the main driving force behind that update was a bug in the hypervisor which allowed direct access to "protected" hardware like the GPU. Sony got spooked and pulled all support for the feature rather than trying to fix whatever was wrong with it.

>>322616573
The bug only works on an ancient firmware version and it only runs an incomplete port of linux at the moment. I doubt people are going to run out and buy a PS4 just for this.

This. You'll need to spoof your firmware version so it thinks you're on the latest firmware and lets you play online.

The PS4 won't get a pricedrop until late 2017. They won't come out with a slim version without a pricedrop either

There was some post about how long after vanilla PS3 next version was released, and if Sony keeps the same time frame, it should be 'some time in 2016'.

And 'some time' most likely means Holiday 2016?

There's also a... slight... difference in sales, popularity and marketshare between the PS3 and PS4

Xbone had to drop 150$ in price at 2 different times before the PS4 nudged its first 50$ drop a few months ago

People are already buying PS4's in droves. It'll happen even more this year now that actual games are comming out, and black friday / Xmas promotion deals without an official pricedrop are enough to convince a lot of people yet on the fence.
Sony knows all that. Do you think their 50%+ marketshare will drop if they don't have a pricedrop this year?

At best you'll see Xbone chopping its price once more and PS4 will follow with one months later, 2017 Q2 at the very best. The new models are already more cost efficient than launch models, In all but looks Sony has already launched their slim model when it comes to profit margin.

Being at the top means much slower price drop rates and new model releases

Okay butane they made any progress with firmware that is not 2 years old? Not that it matters since you can pirate many of the multiplats on your Pc anyway. Also it is pointless to pirate games that need online for PS4.

So basically you get a system that's only good for playing Bloodborne and you make it unable to play Bloodborne?

Why?

Though less true of this gen than last (where early PS3 sales were staggering loss leaders that caused Sony to come out behind for the gen), console sale profit is pretty much entirely based in software/subscription sales.
