I had the same response. It took a while, anon. I don't remember the specific breakpoint, but I want to say it was somewhere between episode twelve and episode fourteen.
It's a lot of buildup, I know. If I remember right it took me about a month to get to that point, because I kept putting off turning on the show, but once the hook really hit I finished the remaining ten or twelve episodes in a single sitting.

Unfortunately a lot of media is like that. When reccomending games I tend to tell people to make it to a certain boss before forming a concrete opinion. I do the same with shows and episode numbers. You can't guarantee they'll last this long, of course, but having a light at the end of the tunnel helps them get to the target boss/ dungeon/ episode/ what-have-you.
For example, I've been told for years that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is really good if you can get past the awful first two seasons. Two seasons. That's asking way too much, so I haven't done it.

That's perfectly reasonable, anon. The game's value is mostly in its music and endgame (and the subsequent run(s)). All the rest is just basically build-up to make the ending(s) better.
I enjoyed it the whole way through, but I don't expect people who aren't digging the several hours before the endgame and new game + to stick with it.
Don't walk away empty-handed though. Go give the full soundtrack a listen and see if you at least like that.

You basically just need to know that the batshit ending 5 of Drakengard led SOMETHING to rek humanity in our universe, kicking off the plot of the game. You'll discover a decent amount of info about what that something is over the course of the game, but as usual, supplementary materials tell the full story (and aren't necessary to enjoy the game).
