I'm not a big FF fan, but I like Tactical RPGs, so is this a decent pick up?
It's pretty good, but the original FFT for Playstation is one of the best games in its genre.

It's no FFT/War of the Lions, but it's actually pretty damn good. I'm sad I lost my copy, I got it for Christmas as a kid.

Aside from your opinion on the story, and inability to make a full human team at the start... none of those were ever a con, for me. I love race-specific classes, I love having to use a certain weapon long enough to learn the ability it gave. I love shit like that.

Decent tactical RPG, but it's a bad FFT.
Just play the original FFT. PS1 or patched PSP version, doesn't matter. Just don't play the unpatched or iOS/Android version.

Laws really suck, especially late game where you have to run in circles on the map until you have non team breaking or mission breaking laws in play.
