As usual they picked the most well-received multiplat.
Witcher is polished, finished game with a lot of content and a focus on storytelling with good writing. The gameplay could have been outright terrible, not just mediocre, and it would have won every award.

Witcher 3 is a big name game, is on most all platforms save Wii U, and is good. Fallout 4 & MGSV are shit, but big. Bloodborne is good, but a PS4 exclusive. Life is Strange is a story game, so hipster reviewers like it, but that's it. Super Mario make is like Bloodborne but swap PS4 for Wii U, hence the lower amounts of votes. Batman and Tombraider are too shitty to even content, and not big enough to instantly be a contender for GoTY. Her Story, Rocket League, and Undertale are indieshit, so they never even had a chance.
