Because fighting games with a gorillion characters are nigh impossible to balance well without making a lot of characters samey.
If 1/3 of the roster is exceptional, is it really exceptional? And how is a character viable without being competitive?

Because Sakurai doesn't know what the fuck he's doing and claims to balance characters taking into account items and 4+ player Smash, even though there's a mode in the game with all of that turned off which is supposed to be competitive, and people who play 8 player Smash with items on clearly don't give a fuck about balance anyway.
I live in NYC and i played that gohan(?) guy. Thats what everyone called him anyway.
I beat him 2-1 with Zelda ONLY.
My brother beat him 3-0 with Falcon in PM, and 2-1 in Smash 4 with Link.

The metagame isn't as developed as Melee or Sm4sh, since contrary to what shitposters here would like you to think, Project M is nowhere near as popular as the other two.
Also add the constant updates with massive changes that pretty much made everyone have to readjust every month.
The metagame may develop more now, but no updates also mean the mod is pretty much dead.

Fox and Marth aren't even top 10 in PM. Everyone knows how to use them in Melee, so they're just the most popular- therefore, they have the biggest metagame and the highest results.

Top tiers in 64/Melee/Brawl/4 have 90:10 or 100:0 matchups with bottom tiers, top tiers in PM have 70:30 matchups with bottom tiers at worse, or 60:40 at best (Jiggs vs ROB) matchups.
Snake is like top 20, still won a big tournament, more proof that PM is the most balanced
