Bear with me, but easily it was Day Z mod. Was part of a community with sub-clans that fought against eachother on our server. Stealing our rival's vehicles and fucking up their camps was glorious as fuck, despite the games obvious flaws. It's a shame the mod is dead now.
My friends and I had the best time fucking around with forge mode on Halo Reach, building shit and playing bumper cars.

I'm probably dating myself, but HLDM was fucking unbelievable back in the day. You had craaaazy custom maps and awesome mods like Action Half-Life, TFC, and early Counter-Strike (I used to play beta 1).

Probably DDR. It's kind of embarrassing, but my friends and I got really into the home version of DDR around 2001-2002, before it was released in America. We played on our modded PSX's.
I played DDR for about 3 months straight and lost 60 pounds during that time. I got into great shape and got REALLY good at the game. My friends and I had a blast with it, but we stopped playing once it caught on in America.
Every now and then I remember those days and want to buy a DDR machine for my home, but my wife mercilessly makes fun of me whenever the topic comes up. I once played a single round at an arcade years ago, and she could barely stand to look at me.

I had to think about this for a minute or two and i'm not quite happy with the answer but it would probably be APB. The game engulfed my life for about four years as i saw it be mismanaged and run into the ground by two different companies.
That being said though it's also the game that allowed to me to break out of my shell and make friends in the first place which used to be really hard for me since i was shy and assumed that everyone would hate me.

As far as playing with people I actually knew, it had to be the CoD'son Wii,specially BO1 and MW3.
I made a good amount of good friends in the official game forums since they were divided from the big console's forums, so we weren't many but were close-knit as a result.
By the time BO2 came out on WiiU we started growing apart more and more despite having some good times in the earlier games. Some time after the support died for that game, the forums did as well and we all drifted apart.I miss them. They were the closest I got to actual internet friends.
