I think it's just that video games were once a niche and stigmatized hobby so naturally it acted as a point of identification for its participants.

Yeah but people don't define themselves or act like they belong to the subculture of "movie goers". Obviously some people are more into movies or literature than others, but they usually just say "I like literature", or "my hobbies are films", and not "I'm a reader and these are the sort of things you need to know to qualify as a reader".

People under 40 generally know what Mario is GTA or Halo, or Minecraft even though they don't play video games. Obviously most don't know most indie games, but the average person also doesn't know who wrote Ulysses.
