There was this really fucked up quest line in FFXI, I don't think many people did it because it was just for a access to the scythe weapon skill which was kinda garbage for a while, but it really got me unexpectedly.
There's this elf dude who lives in the sewers and people think he's a vampire for living down there, only reinforced more by a quest to learn the Drain spell when he asks you to bring him blood. Anyway, if you're a dark knight of high enough level, he'll take on a quest to teach you a scythe skill.
When you complete the quest, he tells you about how he and his friend were ambushed up north by shades, which you run into a lot up there by exploring dungeons. He explains that he contracted some kind of sickness from the encounter and can't be exposed to light, but his friend wasn't so lucky and was turned fully into an undead shade. As you finish the quest, he says something like
>The next time you see a shade, please think twice
I dunno how but a MMO made me feel bad about killing mobs.
