I think they both had their own strengths that the other might have lacked.
One of them being atmosphere, which I believe 999 did much better with the "sinking ship" and exploding bracelets. Made the game significantly more intense than the little poison needle, though I heard they had to change the bracelet idea because of weak-stomached Japanese consumers. But, for the most part, I do agree that VLR was an improvement in most aspects.

you've got to be kidding, there was almost no danger or fear of getting killed by anybody in 999 other than the killer. hardly any of the rooms had any relevance to the story, making you want to rush through them quickly to get back to the text. there's no incentive in going down different routes or rooms because you get no new information to fill in the gaps in the story other than the true ending route. there's no looming danger of being betrayed or killed by any one at any time because you're given no information on zero or anyone until it's too late and you get a dead ending. let's not forget the several completely random characters thrown into the game you'll literally know nothing about until you get the true ending. thank god VLR improved all of this

Ax ending, and that was it. I was satisfied and had no desire to play it again. I read the other routes and the story became convuluted and retarded as fuck, especially the prerequisites for unlocking true end. It's as bad as Peace Walker true end grind.
Then I read how both 999 and VLR got praised for it's story and it reminded me this is the same industry and community that loves dogshit stories like this and KOTOR and why writing and story will always be shit in video games.
