Being from the UK, it started off with the PS1 being extremely popular for FIFA and having more mature games compared to the SNES and N64, I'm talking normie mature games, like Gran Turismo and shit. Since then, the Playstation has always sold well.
Most of the people I know who own a playstation 4 nowadays just play FIFA and Call of Duty.
Plus, Sony marketing it as the most powerful console really worked among the public and the advertising space in London was Sony everywhere

You want to know why this happened ? Because Microsoft ignored most of Middle , and Eastern Europe during the launch of the Xbox 360. We got an overpriced console machine ( same problem with the PS3 at that itme), and an online feature that was not supported for 3-4 years after its launch in Hungary, and a few other countries.
Fastforward to Xbox One release, and Microsoft sort of hinted that not every country is going to get the Xbox Live feature on the Xbox One, and some countries may be left behind , pending for future implementation.
Sony goes and announces to us that no worries, PSN will be supported for all previous countries.
So yeah MS fucked up again in terms of marketing for Eastern Europe.
