Rating them based off of the most fun I had and how memorable I find it, 3 > V >PW > 2 > 4. Not going to rate 1 because it would be unfair to it, it's old as shit and kind of its own thing in how it plays.
The only flaw with 3 is that there is no perfect port. 3DS port improved the controls but ran poorly, HD collection runs well but did not include the control improvements.

the story in MGS games is actually pretty niche because they're usually so over-written that for the layman they don't know what goes over their head and what's just nonsense because it's now a huge story that's inefficiently written in the first place, plus most people who play games don't know how to appreciate stories or even care to do so
the other stuff like the level design is more of a nuance and most people won't pick up on it straight away, there are few very people in the industry that can pick out somewhat subtle issues when a game is brand new

But anon, he is. Skull Face is the demon, the other side of Venom, they are the two phantoms. After shielding BB from the brunt of the blast in the heli he became badly burned, and never got his plastic surgery at the start of the game. Skull Face is the real medic trying to surface in Venom's mind. Medic's actions, both good and evil are represented by these two phantoms.
Had Konami let Kojimbo finish the game you would see this. The morality system was scrapped and replaced with Miller and Ocelot acting like the angel and devil on your shoulders in their bickering.

The thing I disliked the most was how little all that happened mattered in the overall MG story.
Nobody wanted to know about how Big Boss could survive the events of MG1 - nobody cared.
It's answers to a bunch of questions nobody asked. This story didn't need to be told. There's no surprises, no excitement and no interesting information.
It would have helped a lot if we saw how the group got more and more hated by the countries of the world, if we saw them slip into villain territory. Perhaps the parasites infected some USA embassy and nobody would listen to reason, so they had to move in and kill everyone and burn the bodies. They did the right thing but the world hated them for it... or something like that.
After finishing the game, and watching the info on what should have been the last chapter, you're just sitting there thinking "oh, so that happened? That's how Huey started hating himself, that's how Big Boss appeared in MG2, that's how Liquid was as a kid. Oh."
If the story itself had been great then it could have been forgiven. But it was dull as hell.
