The real reason so many people hate Tidus is just that he's a semi-realistically portrayed example of a kid with abandonment issues that was then made into a celebrity who got everything he wanted out of life before he came of age.
He's naive, brash, headstrong, whiny , immature, and somewhat arrogant - and even if he is kind, sociable, and fairly brave it takes until the end of the game before he really matures on-screen, instead of his voiceover just pointing out how he used to act like an ads while his present self continues to act like an ass.

One theory (and one supported by the ultimania) is that Dream Zanarkand functioned just like a normal city would. As in people lived and died and had children seemingly as normal, recycling the pyreflies. Otherwise there'd just be the exact same people there for 1000 years.
