Sonic's style of gameplay for the first 4-5 games were actually pretty great for it's time. You can still go back and play Sonic games, and be impressed by it's physics.
His design, as marketed as it is, actually has lasting appeal. He doesn't look like he's trapped in the late90s/early2000s.
He spawned a comic and TV show, which greatly expanded his audience.

I respectfully disagree as one of the reasons Sonic has had so much trouple with the transition to 3D/newer console generations is the fact Sonic's attitude hasn't really worked in time periods other than early 90s where it worked like a charm. Mario on the other hand is a character that is timeless as he works in any time period/console generation.

Wrong. Sonic's attitude still has great appeal. That's why kids still love him, despite his games being shit. He lonly lost relevance as the quality of his games declined.

If you haven't noticed they have obviously tried to adjust it to better suit the current times, which further proves my point. Also in case you haven't noticed there is a huge problem of older fans of old Sonic games and the younger fans of the newer Sonic games having a different view on what Sonic is.
Truly timeless character will always work without any need for changing his design and/or personality which is something we can't say about Sonic or Crash.

No one disputes Sonic's character. They dispute the gameplay. Older fans want Classic shit. The relatively younger fans want Adventure and choa garden shit, the young fans want Boosty shit, and the new kids will want more Boom shit.
But as far as the character goes? No one is really dissatisfied. Because the CORE of Sonic's character has remained the same. He's always snarky. He's always kindhearted. He's always impatient. And he's always on the run.
The only thing they really changed, is they accentuate his friend loyalty more now. And he's a tad more jokey. But still essentially the same.

Adventure-onwards is where they went all-out DUDE RADICAL MOVES, BODHI with normal-er cities, guitar riffs with lyrics, anime plots and artstyle, edgier characters, etc. They toned down a little after 2006's flop, but by then it was too late, it had all become as much of his image over cute-Sanic's designs as had "gotta-go-fast" had over his initial mix of speed, pinball physics and actual momentum.
