I tried to get them both killed because their both horrible "oh woe is me" characters who served no use to the plot or the player.

Assley is only good for abandoning on Virmire. The only way you can justify saving her over Kaiden is if you want to personally shoot her in that scene in the third one.

It wasn't exactly out of nowhere. He was originally going to be bisexual in Mass Effect, but the guy they modeled Shepard on didn't want to have his face in a gay sex scene.
EA must have paid him a lot more money for Mass Effect 3, or they found out he couldn't do anything about it.
The extended ending had at least one good thing about it.
