Hell, his entire characterization in the reboot was a disgrace. He went from a character with overwhelming magical power and good motivation, pretty well established as being an actual threat to the world due to apparently having control over all that is evil, to a saintly character that does nothing wrong out of his own initiative through the first game, except maybe leave a crazy man to his own fate, and yet the game can't stop gushing about how he's fallen to darkness.
And then in the second game he's still brooding and wants nothing but to be left alone, and to add insult to injury gets kicked out of controlling his own castle, BY HIS OWN CASTLE.
Additionaly, screw everything about the Forgotten One fight.

I blame it on the perceived need to make every protagonist relatable or somehow "humane", despite God of War showing ten or so years ago that you could have an action game with an absolutely psychopathic protagonist and it could still do well. It was fine in the first game, it was the origin story, but the second? I don't want a freaking Dracula that grunts endlessly while grabbing on ledges and has a lowly starving vampire talking back at him while he cries over his emotional woes, I wanted to be feared and dreaded damnit.
Seriously, way to completely ruin one of the most memorable characters in vidya.
