Use more buffs and start every boss fight with everyone at 200cp then. Level grinding isn't really worth it in these games because of how xp is calculated.

Being low on cash is also normal for the series. Sell the mass stuff you get from every battle. If you're in chapter 1 or 4 or have access to the schoolhouse, put elliot in the party and buy him eggs and salt, which he can turn into egg soup with more value than the cost of mats.
Between chapters the class members who aren't on your team also upgrade their gear, so you can steal from them to partly catch up your own party members for free.

I've been thinking the same thing since I started playing it (and back when I played Persona 3/4 as well) and to be honest, I don't think its really any better written than the standard battle academy anime outside more freedom of pace, lesser focus on romance, and the ability to focus on relationships with specific characters that you prefer.
I think the key is the presentation of the medium. No one wants to watch a Gary Stu preach about morals and have everyone fawning over him and wanting to suck his dick all the time.
But deep down, there's a part of everyone who wants to BE the Gary Stu. You want the popularity and the attention and the dick sucking for yourself, and the medium of presentation being a video game allows that much better than a non-interactive medium like anime. Rean is more likeable than Ichika or Ikki or Ayato because the player can more easily insert parts of themselves into the character (like preference in women, for example) and in doing so form a closer bond with the player, because you're thinking the same way (because you're controlling some of his actions and opinions).
