Why do so few games have actual forests? Iy's always just sparsely scattered trees,
>>
consoles cant handle it. There isnt some elaborate complex answer, try thinking about things for more than one second.

To be fair, if the trees were as dense as a real forest, it would be pretty clunky trying to move around in that area. I'm just imaging a lot of your character bumping into things and having the edges of your hitbox get "stuck" on trees.

You could have main and paths and some secondary paths. If it was as dense you would also have god tier hiding and ambush spots.

It is, most of the time. But then it gets all tense because you tumbled down a hill at night, fell down and lost the vital ingredient and torch you were holding, are suddenly in an area you haven't mapped yet, and then you hear your heart beating...

It's a pretty great game though.

>>
>>322274343
Crazy amount of objects and textures cause frame rates to plummet. Plus as other anons suggest it's probably not all that great to navigate around, collision nightmare.
>>
>>322274343
Trees are costly to render.
It's a shame, but the technology to accurately render a realistic world isn't there yet.
More than just with trees, taking Bethesda games as examples, though these traits are common throughout the vidya world, an entire country or large part of an American state is just a 6 minutes sprint from one corner to the other. Cities and towns become barely hamlets with a couple of shops and houses. Supposedly giant mountains become hills climbable in a few minutes. The game world is a caricature or a representative version of a realistic world, cities represent realistic cities, but in the interest of development time and technical limitations everything's scaled down and becomes a bizarre parody of reality.

the forest outside of Flotsam in Witcher 2.

It's funny how people always cherrypick this area whenever they show off Witcher 2's graphics. It is by-far the best looking area in the game and everywhere else in the game looks mediocre.

May as well ask here since people are posting about it. If you mod TW3 so you play as Ciri during the main game how do quests work? Can you just not do them, or can you do them but Ciri speaks with Geralts voice in them?

The development time wasn't limited, they just decided to spend most of it making the visuals and sound as good as possible.

>>
I'm not saying trees and foliage couldn't be vastly improved, but keep in mind that first and foremost, a foirest still needs to be easy to navigate.

If you can't see shit and are constantly stuck between collision meshes, gameplay would suffer and all you gained is better visuals.

There needs to be some balance, and I believe Witcher 3 either hit the sweet spot, or already went too far.

no game could have a fluid enough movement that'd seem natural in a very dense forest.
not only that, but they'd have to check every single nook and cranny in the whole forest for it to work properly, and that's a lot of work when you can just have a slightly less dense forest with a better quality control

Gothic 3 still has the best forest of any game I've played. Deep, dense vegetation. Knee-high, torso-high grasses and weeds of all kind. Floor texture is more dead leaves and dirt than grass. Different models of trees, with large and numerous leaf/branch sprites on them. Models of fallen branches and trees littered all over the place. TALL trees, at that. Not like OP pic.

But then Bethesfuck games are not a good starting point to begin with. Everything that company makes is half-assed.

Good point. I think the control system would have to be made specifically for that type of game though. Like, I can't see you sticking a particularly dense forest with foliage and everything else into any currently-existing control scheme and not have it feel weird and hard to navigate.

I don't know why devs think it's acceptable to not put draw distance and LOD distance in a games options.

In FPS with big maps it's fucking game breaking in instances like you said. It's especially bad when you play old games and the LOD distance is fucking pitiful and if the option was there you could have extended it out so much further with no frame dips at all.

Having real forests would make the game rather unpleasant and annoying to play in, not to mention the hardware requirements going up a bit and the development time possibly getting tripled in the environment department.

Untouched forests have a lot of uneven grounds and is full of small water pockets, stones, bushes, tree thickets, hills, stumps, fallen branches and trees etc.

Mixed forests have this issue as well as leaf forests, pine forests can be a bit easier to traverse though especially if they are planned ones but there is also the risk of encountering pine tree thickets of smaller/younger trees that are nearly impossible to get through. Final nail in the coffin would be the camera, going third person will be troublesome and first person gives bad orientation + it can be annoying for your eyes.

May as well put up a blank wall beside the roads in a game with realistic forests.
