They've remade the client in C++ and will be rolling that out this year.
They made a new Skill, Invention. Its an elite skill that requires 80 blacksmithing, 80 crafting, and 80 Divination to start the skill, The entire skill is focused on high end player content.
New Raids, new quests with a focus on story. Also want to do smaller more comedic quests throughout the game.

The Grand Exchange on its own didn't ruin the economy, it's the fact that when it came out, free trade was removed that did. It meant that prices couldn't ever reach accurate thresholds and quickly, so everyone had to carry shit tons of junk.
With both free trade and a grand exchange, it gives you the opportunity to sell for what you want, both to players and on the G.E, just one way allows you to trade others without idly typing a message for 4 hours or going off website and hoping you share timezones with people.

Imo the fact that buying things was harder made it so items were more worth. Back in the day, all of the cities were filled with players spread across. today, everything is dead. and my only player encounters are idle players at the grand exchange.

Runescape 3 has almost all of those.
It has Pets, quests markers, raids, dailies, double xp weekends.
They ruined it in 07 and it never truly recovered.
I miss it sometimes, but I don't think I'll ever play 07scape. There's no way the community will be the same.

They tried bringing it back when Old School came out, but people then realized that after the initial hype, it was actually really tedious and boring. The problem with no GE is you can never sell half your shit. No one would want like 30 balls of wool individually (meaning you'd have to either sell to a store, keep it, or drop it), but something like that could be bought easily on the GE.
The OSRS people voted it back in, so clearly not as many people hated it as they thought.

I liked runescape for the quests. They were all super fun, and grinding was actually helpful for learning. I would just click and start reading or do homework or some shit while playing since you don't have to be too involved. 10/10 game for people who don't want to waste all time being active in the game.

Okay. It's not great mechanically right? Like at all. It's King's Quest with a basic combat system and pvp.
But that's just it. That's what people love about it. If you like point and click fantasies, you'll love Runescape.
Runescape doesn't have much to offer, but it does legitimately have the best writing in an mmo I've ever seen. The quests are engrossing, they matter and tangibly change the world around you. The characters are lovable. To this day I regret not choosing to save Korasi.
You can't compare it to other mmos because it's just not the same formula. Runescape is driven by writing to make up for its hyper basic gameplay and visuals, and that gives it a unique charm.
