I hated that there were no tech trees in the game, and I was too dumb as a kid to look online. If I'm not mistaken there was something weird with creating units. Could you not queue up units?
Pathfinding was kinda assy and units would run into each other and start stutterstepping
I did have a lot of fun with this game, but I didn't know what I was doing
Prolly going to find my old CD and give it a try and learn the civs and shit

It was great for its time, but Aoe2 was a massive improvement in almost everyway. The only thing I enjoyed about the original more than the 2nd was that you had to be more creative in the beginning to have a good start.

Loved the first two AoE games, even if I was shit at them.
Fun fact, this game was one of the few with a demo that contained an entire mini-campaign that didn't even exist in the full game (Egyptian campaign covering stone -> Bronze age)
Wish more games did demos like that, or even demos at all now.
The main annoyance for me with AoE was the selection limit of 12 units at a time and i think the population cap was something stupid like 50.
I'm also in the minority in preferring the AoE intro more than 2.

Have you not seen their Destiny promo pictures which were literally the promo pics for C&C Tiberium with the main guy's helmet redrawn.
Anyway, Ensemble actually developed the console RTS concept first and only had to retroactively make it Halo because the higher ups at Microsoft were unsure about the prospects of a new IP on Xbox360, even if they liked the game.
Maybe the console RTSs had a future if the game wasn't aimed at 12 year olds... or maybe not, and that move saved the game's ass.

AOE2 was one of those games that was just so much better in every way that it both still holds up today and removes any need for nostalgia for 1.
But yeah, 1 was fun, just completely inferior to 2.

It all basically boils down to them spending the rest of the time they had into remaking the game into a proper Halo form.
This negatively impacted the game for several reasons.
Bungie was relactunt to co-operate, not happy "whoring out" theirMountain Dewritos supportedfranchise.
The dev team had much less time on an already tight schedule with a layoff from Microsoft written by none other than our dear Phil Spencer waiting for them at the end.
As it was, the game released with anemic content and also not as good as they'd hoped because they couldn't finish refining their UI and had to add a 'Select all' button to make the game playable even if it meant ruining all their previous efforts in making it interesting to play.

Huh, I didn't know that about halo wars. Enjoy it had some nice cutscens the gameplay was a little dull in places but pretty much was solid with expect for that select all key which meant i played it like dungeon keeper.

By far the CD audio from AoE 1 was the best music of any Age of Empires game to date.
And the worst part is AoE Gold CD only has Rise of Rome music so you get none of the sweet shit on it.
