haven't played zelda 2, majora. skyward sword and a link between worlds, but i value sidequests and exploration so majora would probably be pretty high too.

I've played all the console Zelda games (as they came out, so nostalgia goggles are in full effect), and it just so happens that my favorite isthe only one I played on handheld, Phantom Hourglass.
I know a lot of people have beef with the game, but from it I got a sense of adventure and exploration, and even a real treasure hunting and dungeon crawling experience, that I never got from the others.

3D is Majora's Mask and Skyward Sword. I had a blast with the time mechanics and the motion controllers.
2D is Link's Awakening blew me away and then Minish Cap because that game was so damn alive. After every dungeon there was something new in the castle town. To be fair I haven't played the oracle series nor Four Swords Adventures.

the style of Link in the Oracles games is a very toon style and it looks great. WW is getting really overused and lame in my opinion but I've never been a fan of the Chibi Super Deformed style they use in the WW style games.

Honestly I think this is actually what is wrong with Zelda. Nintendo is too focus on trying to link (no pun intended) all the games in a weird timeline. Just make the fucking game. SS was so fucking bad for so many reason but one of them was their moronic obsession on explaining why Ganon is the way he is. Yeah OoT was a story about how he gain their Triforce and became Ganon. But the story it told was fine on it's own. It was a story that could have been self contain with no knowledge of the other games. SS however is all about trying to explain Hyrule and how everything came to be.

I dunno, I like how many Zelda games are direct sequels of other ones but it doesn't affect the story so much. Like Zelda 2 to Zelda 1, Link's Awakening to ALTTP, or Majora's Mask to OoT.
The thing is, these were clearly planned to be sequels, and can still be played without knowledge of previous games. But Triforce Heroes in its timeline place is so clearly a marketing ploy.

Oracles are sequels to ALttP too. As for Triforce Heroes being a sequel as I said I feel they feel almost force to do it. Like every Zelda game has to fit into the timeline in some fashion.
3D: Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, Majora's Mask are tied for me. SS had the best overworld, TP had the best dungeons, MM was a balanced game with interesting characters.
2.5D: Spirit Tracks. Great dungeons, great music. Fuck the train though.
2D: Link's Awakening. The music, the overworld, the graphics, the story, everything.There's probably nostalgia at play here because I played A Link to the Past much later than LA.

I mostly mean the puzzle aspect of the dungeons. Its now more combat heavy with RPG drops (which if you look at it as a story it's pretty annoying since you play as Death and you have the weakest gear in the game at the start). Darksider 1 was a complete Zelda game for better or worse. 2 was them trying to get away. My guess its because too many people jokingly called it just a rip off. Personally I didn't like Darksiders 1 but I know a few that did so maybe they should have kept the Zelda stuff and just try to fix it up.

I think I just didn't like most of the design around Darksiders 1. The character has too much going on with him to really be pleasing to me. Dungeons has some interesting things about but most of the time I felt it wasn't really utilized well enough. Felt it was mostly just straight lines to places when 3D Zelda games were much more open and freer. Like I said I have a few friends that liked it but personally I just felt it wasn't all that good.
And maybe they could have fixed a lot of that but instead they kind of went in a different direction.

Jesus fuck yes, War was a design atrocity. They made Death the sequel protag and he has a grim reaper seemingly made out of junk for a devil trigger and he manages to come off as less edgy and over designed.
The Overworld was pretty closed down. I guess it helps that i likes those shadow realm challanges but its pretty clear they were padding. It is a beat em up though, and with only four dungeons its pretty clear why the developers wanted to enclose you in narrower paths to fight enemy waves along the way. but It definitely felt like a game someone would find shitty i agree, quite a few things were off.

I don't want to really bash it too much. It did have a few things that could have been interesting. But to me nothing really came together well at all. And actually made me appreciate Zelda way more. With all the faults I feel Zelda has I really say Nintendo really does know how to do things well regarding Zelda. The character is always simple but noticeable in a lineup, dungeons are full of fun secrets while feeling like they are open and also felt old, overworld is nicely open (besides SS). Yeah the overworld tends to be nothing but filler I tend to love the transportation around it (horse in OoT and TP, boat in WW, and while there's problems with the control bird in SS).
