I shouldn't say straightforward, but it's not like Evangelion where you have to read guidebooks to understand what the fuck is going on by the end.
All the information you need to understand is there, but it becomes confusing for some people who get caught up in the strangeness. And a fair amount of the specifics of the story are deliberately left up to interpretation.

the last two episodes were very straight forward, it was nothing more than an internal monologue.
EoE can be a bit confusing at first glance, but sn't as much when you realize that you have the last 2 episodes as well as the rest to serve as context, and clue you in to what it might mean.
i can't speak for everyone, but i thought lain was much more difficult to follow than eva.
