Played through 4 with an Insect Glaive. Fun, but kind of trivialized a lot of hunts.
Used Gunlance in my first playthrough of 3, and currently replaying 3 with Hunting Horn. Both I find to be a ton of fun, and I don't imagine they're much different in 4.
Good old GS
Longsword was always my trusty go-to from all the way back in Freedom 2.
It's still great, but I've been playing double sword more in MH4U and that's a blast too.
There's just something about attacking an unsuspecting monster with two giant chainsaws.

My niggas. I been playing GL almost exclusively throughout MH4U, only switching to SnS for certain monsters. I like being able to just sit there and tank the monster's hits and not needing to worry about sharpness (if Wide GL) but honestly if you want a more "standard" MH experience you should just go with one of the swords or hammers first.
Lance, which I started with back in Freedom unite. I also switch around with SnS, IG, HBG and HH, also thinking of getting into gunlancing as well because it doesn't seem too different to lance.
Can't wait for MHX and the improvements to SnS.

Get good with Great Sword, and then try out some Light Bowgunning, look up damage charts on kiranico, and learn where to hit monsters with w/e weapon you're using. This will teach you the game.

Mh4u was my first monhun, and Istarted off with the longsword for the first 40hrs of caravan. I then learned i was using the LS completely wrong and I realized I didn't even like it.
Great Sword is my main weapon now, but I think i have more fun with the Switch Axe. Dual Blades are okay too, i tried them for a while.
Most people will say it sucks, but my weapon of choice is the Hammer.
Great power and mobility, the ability to send a monster reeling by slapping it on the head.
I think the only downside is that it has no options if you want to sever a tail. (No Blade, No Cut.)

I learned how to use multiple weapons. Keeps things from getting to stale. For example, fighting any of the Blos with a charge blade puts me to sleep as I'm able to GP everything they dish out. Fighting them with a LBG is rad as fuck though.

A good mount happy insect glaive can shut down a Gravios, Basarios, any Fatalis variation, or Gogma pretty easily.

Evade lancing is easy mode, even if you don't get good kill times without being superpro. Bow is really fun as well. GS is ezmode no matter what. Swaxe feels like the way the game is meant to be played in terms of difficulty/effectiveness ratio.
I use charge blade because before I played the game I saw some world record time with it and I decided it was what I wanted to use

I don't know what my favorite is I just use so many.
Tri I primarily used lance and bowgun but also a bit of everything else.
3U was primarily Dual Blades, Gunlance and Bow, but also a bit of everything else.
4U I don't have a main yet. I'm in HR and primarily just used CB and IG but got bored of them and now I'm build a library of LS. I want to have everything again though, especially bowguns.

It still can be a pain on certain monsters which is why you should make sure speed is maxed out on your bug by the time its fully upgraded.
That said, you don't need to get the speed bug itself, you can get one of the other top bugs and still max out speed. Look up gaijin hunter's bug making guide

It bugs me sometimes as a HBG main but the way I aim now is by using the normal camera to quick aim. It is only really a pain when the weakpoint is high up, thing like Tigrex and Cuga I can nail the head without adjusting the camera if I input it fast enough. I'm also enjoying that in X (at least with Bushido and aerial) there is a quick directional change for crouching fire when initializing the animation

Just blind fire it. Make your character face where you want to shoot, then shoot it. The slower your bug is, the closer you will need to be to make sure you get the color you want, but blind firing should generally get you what you need.
THere are the occasional enemies like Gravios whose heads are too high to get red regularly, but you should be jump attacking them anyway to knock them down

Evasion skills make your sidesteps amazing. Make lots of Dash Juice, Swaxe loves having stamina. Other than that, use power phial sword mode almost exclusively, hone weapons for power, and let the good times roll.

I'd say Zinogre U or Chameleos's set would be the best, but that's mostly my bias as throughout HR and early G-Rank, Zinogre U was my makeshift GS set and the Chameleos set gave me easy access to Sharpness+1, HG Earplugs, Wind Res High, Tremor Res, Bombardier, Mushroomancer, Status Crit, Status Attack+2, and other skills if I had the right decorations.
