Maybe thematically. From what I've seen, class interdependency, specialized roles etc. are still pretty much completely absent and in a way it distances itself even further from these concepts (for example, raid buffs are meaningless in neo-WoW, but Legion seems to be removing them altogether, which increases the distance to actually having support roles in the game rather than everyone doing the same thing with different animations and resource names).

Well, they have been thematically different since day 1 (and in some ways more so than now or in Legion, with actually unique roles, fluff abilities etc). That has always been one of WoW's strengths.
Specs within the class often haven't been too distinct, though. Warrior specs have been distinct, for example, but what about rogues and hunters? They've always been fairly same-y (wow, I'm using "Mutilate" instead of "Sinister Strike" or "Hemorrhage").

I can honestly not tell what's in a raid anymore if I don't ask/inspect things. The DkS pallies and warriors all look like they're doing the same thing, there are no specs for rogue, if you play rogue you're just a rogue. I can hardly tell the difference between lock, mage, and shaman.
In fact the only thing I know for sure is in a raid is a shadow priest, and that's only to relentlessly mock them and ask when they're gonna start playing an affliction lock already.
