I'm looking at a DFGT on Craigslist going for 40 bucks. Closest I've played to a racing sim was a bit of Forza 2, which I never got really into.
I really like it. I've only got 17 hours played but I forsee putting in much more. Easily the best in the series. Controls amazing using wheel or controller.

It isn't hard to make good graphics for racing games. Console exclusive racing games look amazing, Dirt Rally is a PC exclusive and at 4k with ultra settings it looks amazing. That is one of the reasons it was so popular on /v/. Use your brain idiot (and your eyes).

I've been playing the pirated beta for a while. Don't know about the final version but the beta had a few good tracks and a decent selection of cars. Of course this is more of a simulator, driving skills are actually needed and it takes a lot of practice.
Game looks fantastic too. I don't know where I put my screenshots but here's a quick sample that doesn't make justice. Also yes you need at least a controller

First game I ever bought in alpha, didn't regret it. Fantastic game for people serious about rally racing, I heard many people who liked dirt 3 didn't care for it because it got harder.
To give you an idea people call it the dark souls of racing, as even on open difficulty you likely won't win that heat even if you nailed every corner.

The game's pretty unforgiving because you're driving a car at high speed at an uneven terrain with no maps or help except for a copilot I can't listen to because I'm focused on not crashing the car. My only problem is that in the beta the AI did whatever it could to get to the first place, even if it involved tackling other cars.

Glowing brake discs are a result of extreme heat and friction from braking.
They are not neon. They are made specifically to hold up to the extreme heat and temperature often found in racing. What you are seeing is the discs reaching very high temperatures.
It is highly unlikely to see road cars with glowing brakes. On public roads, you usually aren't travel fast enough/hooning hard enough or down a steep enough grade to warrant glowing brakes.
Engine braking is used to conserve your brakes in these situations. If you live or visit a mountainous area with steep grades that semi trucks are allowed to travel on, watch and listen as they go down hill. In combination with Engine Braking, you will hear the trucks revving higher than usual, keeping a steady and manageable speed with with low gearing. If they don't do this, they will essentially "cook" their brakes, which is very undesirable. Once your brakes reach a certain limit, they start to "fade", which makes it harder to stop than usual, sometimes rendering the ability to slow down with your brakes unavailable.
So yeah. It looks cool and is fine on the track as long as you are prepped for the abuse.
