Microsoft probably "promised" them they would sell X copies on the platform, I highly doubt that did cover that possibility (or not selling that very well) when they made the agreement. That's why SquareEnix had plans on releasing it on all platforms. Maybe they did break a profit, but it does depend on how many units it sold on xbox, which weren't many. Shit isn't always black and white, there's a lot more nuance about it. But hey, it sure as fuck did not translate to "more sales".
Also, you also have to consider that these kinds of deals not only damage the game's brand, but the companies.
