People assume Shantae is all about the girls, but it really is a fun game, the problem is it has next to no replayability
Shovel Knight is shorter, less fun and actually held down by its NES looks (Music would be much better if it wasn't 8bit), but it really is much more replayable and the free DLCs will keep you hooked: the Plague Knight one was brilliant and I'm still waiting Spectre and King

I bought SK but regreted it, played 3 hours and didn't touch, I still have to finish it, well it is pretty boring all the time. The fact that you lose money when you die makes me mad.
I wish I had purchased Shantae because it looks more like a metroidvania. I didn't play it but I would recommend instead.

Having bought and played both, I'd say go for Pirate's Curse first, since it's quicker to beat and well worth the price it's at, then get Shovel Knight if you're wanting more.
Shovel Knight goes for an old school kind of thing, while Pirate's Curse is more "modern" while taking things from middle school things. If you're a fan of old school games, you might love Shovel Knight but I admittedly gave up on it half way due to getting bored of it and being shit at it. Pirate's Curse is a guaranteed fun treat, though it's short.

Prefacing this by saying I haven't finished SK yet, only started my first playthrough a few days ago.
PC has more to offer in exploration, a more expansive story/dialogue, more humor. The Shantae games have more personality than almost any other game and that's true about PC in particular. The platforming is fun enough, but too basic to be memorable until you unlock some of the late-game items, at which point it becomes great. It's a bit easier a game than I'd like, until like the last half-hour where there was a big spike in difficulty.
SK's exploration is more focused in smaller secrets. The world is just "explored" through a separate overworld screen. So far, the story is nice and does have more personality than I expected, but it definitely isn't as prominent as in PC. Not as many tits either. The basic platforming and combat is more fulfilling than the first 3/4 of PC. The game also offers a lot more challenge overall, either that or I'm just a lot worse at it.
