I just got a wii u for myself and my family, it's my first console since the PS1 so I feel a little confused when I look up how some of this works.
1) Do some games just have online multiplayer and not have local multiplayer? I have a pretty shitty internet connectionhttp://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4956736215so online only multiplayer is going to suck ass
2) How do the controllers work? I see there is a gamepad with a picture on it and at least two other controllers. Are they for specific games?
3) what are some good family /couch games

1. Splatoon is mostly online.
2. It comes with the gamepad. You'll have to buy the other controllers separately. The Wii controllers work with it though.
3. Family games: Mario party. Mario kart. Anything with mario.

1) Wii U has plenty of local coop games so you will be satisfied.
2) Apart from the mandatory tablet controller you can use wii u pro controllers, game cube controllers (you need an adapter) or wii motes from wii (you need a sensor bar)
3) Mario Party 10 for uber casuals or something like NSMBU, Yoshi's Wooly World or Donkey Kong for more advanced gamers among family members

Best local multiplayer games are Mario Kart and Smash.
Super Mario Maker is great with other people as well but it's technically not multiplayer.

Super mario 3d world is really enjoyable and it can be played with 4 players. One of the best mario games for sure. Give it a try.
Also Wii U can run all wii games aswell.You can just buy a wii game and run it with ease on your wiiu.
