What went wrong?
Focus on "raid" content instead of player to player interactivity
WoW happened
now every MMO wants the not-MMO audience that rushes to end game and sits in solo instances queueing for faceroll content that is burned through in a week

playerbase
Literally the playerbase are dumb casuals
Take Black Desert for example, it started as a hardcore game with death penalties, looting people's corpses and challenging mobs, but the shitty community casuals who were used to playing their shitty korean grinders with no challenge started spamming the forum and crying that the game is too hard so the devs changed the game into total fucking casual garbage

Lol jesus fucking Christ the black desert community
>in other regions the game is f2p
>in NA the game is B2P yet STILL has p2w cash shop and you have to pay real money every time you want to change your character's appearance
"The community: "It's OK the devs need to earn money too shut up just enjoy the game"
Themepark MMOS
The concept of "endgame"
It being either another boring as fuck swords and sorcery thing or far future thing.
The technological wall.

WoW
Literally every game before WoW did something unique, the devs tried to keep creating new stuff over and over
Then WoW happened and since then every game was a WoW in a different skin
They are not the 'be whatever you want' games anymore.

Every game before WoW was an Everquest ripoff, including FFXI.

The RPG part. MMO's can be a lot of fun if they're not trying to become an endless grindfest.
WoW happened
Every game wants to be WoW. Even after all these years.
>>322011746
people finally realized they could never truly beat an mmo and stopped paying

Offline RPGs give you the option of grinding until you become OP and destroy everything on sight. MMORPGs are forced to focus on balance to the point grinding becomes more of a job and doesn't feel rewarding at all.
Tab-targeting hotkey-based combat is the only gameplay that works well in an MMORPG, any attempt to dispute this is wrong.

FFXI had a standard menu-based combat reminiscent of the other FFs and it worked just fine.
Turned into a genre that was pandered to the people who didn't want to play with other people.
