II and V are great.

1 is a great start with dated graphics and a limited customization system.
2 is a perfect improvement on everything 1 was doing and then some. It's easily the best in the series.
3 is a step-back graphic-wise but still has an appreciable cast of colorful characters, a good story, and fun battle system.
4 is just not as good as any of the other and a step back in every way. Some people cite dumb shit like being able to play as Jeane or having Ted in it as reasons to check it out, but it's so disconnected from the rest of the series that you could skip it with little to no consequence. Almost no creative weapon users (1 handed swords, exact same stance), boring magic spells animations, loss of two spots in your party, and a plain boring antagonist. They also tried to rip off Windwaker's sailing mechanics and botched it with a ridiculous encounter rate at sea. Seriously, dude. It's so fucking frequent.
5 was a good attempt to go back to its routes but still had very washed out graphics. Has more connection to the other games than 4 so worth checking out. The characters aren't bad either. I'd rank it somewhere below 2, maybe even with 1, and slightly above 3.

Pretty good for ps2 era and it's made by Konami. And in care you don't know, amazing character animation for some reason, at least compared to much higher budget game like Tales.
2 is my favorite game of all time.

I didn't comment on the fluidity of animation because they've always been so-so. V sticks out like a sore thumb to be especially because in the beginning when you're in the nuked area and Falena everything is just so damn bright. Even with brightness turned down it just hurt my eyes.
It does get better though.

Suikoden 3 is one of the most under appreciated games. It's really good. I had a lot of fun with it.

Start with I and play them in order, though you don't miss too much by skipping 4 since it's like 150 years before the first game and not as connected. 2 is what most consider the best in the series, but 1 is pretty short, albeit cliche.
Both 1 and 2 are like 10 bucks each on PSN so go ahead and get 'em.

The main reason fro this is that- aside from story- there isn't much reason to replay 1 BUT having a perfect save file is awesome because...
You can upload it to Suikoden II when you start and get some really cool extra shit I'm not spoiling. Now I'd say play Suikoden II multiple times with and without a guide. There's so much shit to do, extra items to get, different characters to recruit (Valeria vs Kasumi etc.), ending (Elza/Clive speed run ending), and just a ton of replayability all around. Eventually you'll want a perfect save-file of 2 though because then...
You can upload it to Suikoden 3 when you start. You don't get as much for uploading 1 to 2, but you do get a couple of little nifty extras. 3 is a great tie-up to the series anyway and expands the battle system in a lots of fun an interesting ways.
I'd say skip/longplay 4, and then play 5. 5 is still very good.

You can do this but you'll miss out on appreciating certain characters from 1. Buuuut maybe you'll like it so much you'll go back and play all the others. Be warned though, none of the games are as good as 2. Hell, MOST games are not as good as 2.

I played it for the first time a couple of years ago... At first I was really surprised because it was a lot better than I expected, but then they start recycling every scenario but with a slightly different viewpoint this time. It got tiring pretty fast so I couldn't bother finishing it. And the music was overall very disappointing for a Suikoden game.

I liked the concept but it wasn't done in the best possible way. Going through that generic forest wasn't even fun the first time, the fact you're forced to do it several sucks

I have the strangest reason for liking Suikoden II...
I was really sick and it was cold, and I found out you can play the entire game with just your right hand. There is nothing on the left side of the controller that isn't also on the right side.
So I could get max comfy and play it in whatever position I wanted lol.
Also it was a pretty fun game and collecting armies was satisfying. Ended up getting kinda upset that I was missing out on heroes, because the game is kind of a strategy-guide-needed-game.
