Splinter is actually pretty great in IDW, he had the same anger issues Raphael has in his past, and it still clouds his judgement in this.
The IDW universe is very much an 'ultimate' universe. It pulls in shit from every adaption, Technodrome included.
The Nick cartoon also pulls heavily from the 80's cartoon, so they aren't trying to distance themselves at all.

Yeah, it's pretty much the best the Turtles have been in a long time, they aren't picky on what stories to adapt but they often have the more "out there" storylines as miniseries. You can just get the Trades and use this guide ( >>321994092) on which miniseries to read while reading that trade to get background info

No joke, IDW is maybe my favorite version of Turtles, except MAYBE Soul's Winter. It's easily the most cohesive and marries all sorts of elements from every version of Ninja Turtles. Only issue with it is with so many characters sometimes certain ones don't get their moments to shine and are a little one note, and the pacing can be glacial at times. Santolouco also has serious issues doing dialogue that doesn't sound stilted at times, but I don't notice it as much as others. The side stories are also damn near essential at times with how much they explain about certain elements.
