I'll give a bit more detail.
Awhile ago, "General Threads" became popular, not just in /v/, but all over 4chan. Popular franchises or topics would max out their post limit before falling off Page 10, so people would remake the thread so they could continue their discussion. Out of all the places on 4chan, they were very numerous on /v/ so /vg/ was created for the sole purpose of people to create, and then re-create, threads dedicated to one particular niche/topic. This might range from popular video game series, like Elder Scrolls, or more broad like Voxel games, fighting games, things like that. You'll have threads about developers, franchises, and genres. These generals typically have a copy pasta at the start, with lots of starting information about the topic in question. FAQs, general information, stuff like that.
It can be interesting to lurk sometimes, but the same anonss will keep the conversation going. Some threads anons will be less likely to answer random questions, as they get the same questions all the time and get bored of answering them, while others can be fairly helpful.
/v/ is about anything and everything related to video games, as long as it relates to video games.

/v/ has them, threads in the past post webms of great moments, and videos of the best matches. Since most people on /fgg/ have seen them all, they don't get posted as much. They also greatly discourage people from posting their own webms or moments in games.
Since most people on /fgg/ know eachother, they get a cabin fever thing going and pointless bickering ensues
That's the main issue with generals, shit stagnates. Lately due to mods shit's gotten much better though, it used to be unbearable
