I used to love it. I even got a Vita just to play the Golden version, but all of the anime and spin-offs soured me on it.
Don't get me wrong, I love Arena for the gameplay, but I dropped the story mode halfway through because I got tired of the characters.

I'm not familiar with the Persona series, but I just started playing Persona 4 because people on /v/ kept praising it. Why does the game start so slow? The first two hours of the game are literally pressing one button and watching a slideshow. I might as well watch an anime. What's the appeal of these games, is it just waifu-faggotry?

P4 is a very comfy and stylish JRPG with some nice enough social sim elements and very nicely polished traditional turn-based mechanics. If what you want is some super dramatic and over the top story or earth-shattering gameplay innovations you're going to be left wanting.

P4A had no characters headlining except for her. Everyone got a full, 2 hours long story mode where they get to save the day.
Even in the sequel we had a Tartarsauce tower, Dark Hour-lite and the mastermind ended up being one of Kirijo's failures.
