It was the start of Samus losing her character. Instead of being a bounty hunter who happened to be a woman, people saw her in the Zero Suit and went crazy with the artwork and porn. Next thing you know, Other M comes in and takes her character and does a complete 360 with it. I'm not even a Metroid fan, and I know that you have more people posting Samus outside her armor than people actually discussing the games.
Brawl was the start of that cancer.

Nintendo just doesn't know what to do with Metroid, because the dev who was pushing it back in their formative years and made it into a staple Nintendo IP, is now a buck-toothed retard who needs to be kept away from it forever, and retired to a home somewhere to make more shit like Tomodachi Life.
So without that dev pushing for it, it's just sitting there, no wind in its sails.
Miyamoto loves Mario and Pikmin, so you better believe we are getting more of those in whatever ways he can make it, but Sakamoto lost interest in making Metroid and Other M was his attempt to make a completely different thing wearing a Metroid skin. He outsourced the gameplay because he didn't even give a shit. How well it 'played' was not on his mind at any point. He only cared about the "space drama" he'd written and seeing it play out.
The only reason Samus stays orange for the entire game is because Sakamoto thought the Gravity suit looked "strange" in cutscenes.
