ironhax is a stable launcher for hbc, which lets you play userland homebrew, meaning no piracy. however, having userland homebrew makes it easier to use the kernel exploits that will be coming out soon.
ironhax needs hbc to be set up initially, though, so you need to already have a way to launch hbc before you can install it. the easiest way is browserhax, and it should work on 9.6 with no weirdness or issues. if you want ironhax, though, you'll either need the old version already downloaded or you'll probably need to update to get it using the old eshop launcher in hbc.
i don't recommend updating if you're on 9.6, since there are other hax that accomplish what ironhax does, like menuhax/shufflehax (mostly) and oot3dhax (completely). all that matters is you have a stable hax solution before browserhax gets patched, and menuhax/shufflehax or oot3dhax will do that just as well as ironhax.
whatever you do, if you're on 9.6 (especially on a n3ds), don't update.
