I want to say that Undertale isn't GOTY. I actually loved Undertale, played it to death, but I understand that it's good relative to its price and budget and should not reasonably be considered GOTY. But I seriously cannot think of a single game from 2015 that should be GOTY. This year was that terrible.
I still wouldn't consider Undertale more than 7/10, and again I liked playing it, but 7/10 was seriously the best this year managed to get.

Judged independently from it's awful fanbase and EQUALLY terrible counter fanbase whose entire lives revolve around shitting on the game at any given opportunity it's pretty great.

Papyrus ended up being my favorite character. He never understood the weight of anything he was doing. He was upbeat, optimistic, and delusional. He was like a giant child who wanted just to achieve his goals in life and his friends to be happy.
Everyone else except Toriel was a shitter to the MC in the end, but Papyrus totally deserved to have a happy ending.

8/10 game. It was as long as it needed to be it, good story and characters and was fairly funny for the most part and when it wasn't I didn't nearly cringe as much as say in Sunset Overdrive or Borderlands 2. That said replaying the game, especially as someone who got the neutral ending solely by accidentally killing one character and expected to replay the game nearly the same exact way makes it repetitive. What makes the game interesting gamplay wise is figuring each monsters attack and how to spare them. After beating the game sparing each monster over again isn't really as fun.

It's a solid 8. The battle system was unique enough. The graphics were what they intended to be. Writing was pretty good, and the variance in gameplay options altering it was solid. The True Pacifist ending is a little too on the nose and lacks the narrative innovation that the game could've had. The Genocide ending is a little too...actually, no, I was going to say out-of-left-field, but then I remembered just how truly jarring the Giygas reveal is, so that's really more to do with the source materials, I think. Rightfully, the game shouldn't have had any 'happy' endings.
Worth a play, at least.

When you get down to it Undertale is just a nice little game. It's far from anything grand but it feels like it does everything it sets out to do and full likes a complete, if compact, package. Graphics are weak and inconsistent, gameplay is simple, writing is charming, music is great.
The intense and crazy love for the game feels like it's coming from a group that doesn't play a lot of games and is easily bowled over by even simple emotional moments, while the intense and crazy hate mostly seems like one half /pol/ retards who hate it on the principle that it's popular on tumblr and the other half seems like falseflagging for (you)s.
I'm also fairly convinced a lot of the craziest ones on both sides haven't actually played it.

i made it, mostly out of severe disappointment.
was on the hype train since the kikestarter launched, and felt the final game didn't deliver what was advertised.
I expected a proper homage to earthbound with a neat little battle system and optional killing
I got a game where you have to go on a date with a gay fish, and listen to a weaboo rant about anime dubs.
by the time any of these elements were introduced it was too late to refund.
next time there's a promising indie game i'll pirate before playing.

You also need to understand the climate under which she left and the fact that she was holed up in the Ruins for god knows how long and didn't know that the monsters outside had changed. That's why she says "you're no different than them" in certain scenarios.

It's really easy to be on the sidelines and give hindsight, but she never really did anything. She let it occur, when it's clear that she could have done SOMETHING. Instead, she really sticks all of the fault on the guy, and doesn't really evaluate how much of the problem she was too or really also learned why her own actions were wrong.
