Inquisition had a shit plot and an open world full of bland busy work, not to mention the worst female companions of any BioWare game to date. The only thing the game really did right was having all four races playable, but we already know Andromeda isn't going to do anything like that.

There are far better WRPGs out there, sure, but it's easily the best Dragon Age game and one of the better RPGs in the last couple years.

An RPG, in my mind, is a game where you walk around exploring and talking to people in a semi-open environment where you level up and build stats that determine your odds in battle rather than skill.
"Role playing" has little to do with it, which begs the question where that name came from in the first place.

To each his own. DA:O was boring as hell for 80% of the game so I zoomed through it to be done with it, and DA2 was fucking trash that took me a good two years to finally force myself through to the end to see the conclusion.
I played the shit out of DA:I though, I dumped just under 90 hours into it and didn't find a moment of it boring or tedious. I can only think of a handful of RPGs I can honestly say that about.
But it's fine if you didn't like it, I'm just saying that I did.

A set character is still a role. Just look at acting. Role means more than just a character you personally made up. It means having a part in the narrative. A moving force that is integral to the story. That there is a "person," more an abstraction of a person represented by traits, desires, and personal rules, that stands a part from the players' and they try to actually "play" to in the game. Plenty of tabletop RPGs have premade characters you can practice with. Plenty of role players will jump in as some character the DM introduced. But functionally, there's little difference in having to play a character you created and someone else did. You're supposed to have a set of guidelines you follow, regardless of whether they were given to you or you set them yourself. Not trying to play an actual character, even just a shallow one, is frowned upon. You get more wiggle room with the latter, I suppose, but in a videogame it's all rather academic, since there is still nowhere near the freedom there is in pen and paper games.
Whether you choose to send your inquisition forces to sort out some mage rebellion problem or have Geralt go drinking with his old buddies, the player is selecting from a limited pool of possibilites what they believe will be the most sensible, interesting, or rewarding way to go.

Is there ever a point in the game where, mechanically, you're meant to make some personal choice for Mario? Or Dante? Or Ryu? Where you're meant to play out a scenario that will illuminate their personality. "What's my motivation?," as the cliche goes. Can these games be played differently if you try some other interpretation of the character you're controlling, and is this an actual mechanic in the game code?
Things have blended a bit in recent times, with RPG mechanics, both crunch and fluff, making their way to other genres. The point of the post was more to expound upon why "Role" is the word used in RPG and what it is meant to cover, rather than argue that it literally can not mean anything else, or that the word easily draws lines on genres.
