I'm really not sure why they allowed saving anywhere, I can't argue that that isn't pretty casual. The maps thing doesn't really matter though since you usually find the maps in a chest right near the start of a dungeon anyway, and the instant alchemy just saves time, it doesn't really make anything easier (unless you know which item you can make and sell for a high price and unlike everything else, it never goes down, so you can make several hundred thousand gold in an hour).

Yeah the alchemy is super easy free money, I'm pretty sure you can even combine medicinal herbs for a sizable profit. Saving everywhere would be okay if you were just suspending your game temporarily but if you can reload a save right before a boss then that's pretty dumb. The HP/MP restore on level up is also a big deal since you can completely recover in the middle of a dungeon or something. And I guess the visible enemies might technically be more casual but that's okay since random battles are cancer.

The SFC version is better. Still grindy, but less so. It's just overall more convenient. I started with that version of that game and worked my way up through the series this year. I had fun. I played: The versions I played were:
I-III: SFC
IV: PSX (Nihongo only. Play the DS version if you want a better game, the NES version if you want a localization that is apparently not awful)
V: PS2 (go for the DS if you want Debora)
VI: DS
VII - VIII: 3DS
If DQ I doesn't do it for you, try III, IV, V, or VIII (though you may want to wait for the 3DS version of VIII).

I know what you mean. I generally have no problem enjoying the original versions of games from the 80s, but Dragon Quest was a bit hard to get into. It's short enough that I finished it in two days though, so it didn't really matter. II was better, but it still didn't suck me in. Still, only took three days to complete, so whatever. III is what really pulled me into the series, though I hadn't been told how great it was, only that it was good. My expectations weren't super high, and I think that helped. Don't go into it expecting the greatest thing ever, go into it expecting an 80s JRPG.

Now, what ACTUALLY annoys me about the localisation of Dragon Quest games are the name changes and excessive accents. 8 did a good job with accents, 4 was okay (but since they cut out party chat you didn't really have a chance to be annoyed by Russian Alena or Irish Torneko), 5 was ruined by the fucking Vodka Drunkinski Russian accents they gave the monsters (hard to take Pancraz's death seriously when the things killing him talk like Yakov Fucking Smirrnoff), 6 and 9 were bearable. Name changes are dumb but those at least I can live with.

I haven't seen the "normal" Jessica ending, but in the one you get after slapping the Dragon God' shit, you can choose to marry Jessica during the ending instead if you've seen a certain (new, I believe) scene with her. Then they get married.
Morrie and Gelda just sorta tag along. If you beat Morrie in the arena he basically just says: "Boy! You're strong! I'mma follow you and become stronger myself!". Gelda just says you smell like treasure after you beat Captain Crow and joins. They sometimes speak up in cutscenes if you've got them with you, and they both have a little screen time in the endings (it was pretty funny seeing Gelda impersonate Yangus, making fun of him whining about how his Aniki has probably forgotten about him).

Weirdly I love FF2. It's a weird taste for people. FF2 is really only playable if you go out of your way and read how all the different mechanics work for like a day before actually playing it. Like how gear works and other things. Once you have a good understanding the game is pretty amazing. I mean if done right you never need to grind outside of maybe gaining some HP and MP near the start just to get to the next town. Once you can do that you are 100% grind free for the rest of the game.

Yeah, I read a bit and my last playthrough was ridiculously easy. I just wore a bunch of stuff that had shit for defense but ended up getting my evasion up to 99, so I was almost never hit anyway. 99 evasion + 16 Frog = Unbeatable.

That's the best way to play. Any gear with pretty nice Defense tends to be heavy. And heavy gear lowers your Agility and Evasion rating. So it's best to just equip everyone with cloth and just go. And as I said once you get over the start with some knowledge of the game FF2 is pretty good. It's just a weird like fucker of a game.

As I said it's all based on if Nintendo gets publishing rights to bring it over here. And outside of Heroes the last DQ game SE brought over themselves was I think 5. Right now SE can't even get themselves to publish the mainline DQ games. So if they still don't care enough to publish here themselves I can see them signing a publishing agreement with Nintendo so only DQ11 can be publish by Nintendo.

Or they just don't bring it over. Which has been pretty standard practice with Dragon Quest games the past few years. Shit, VII's remake came out over two years ago and even after Nintendo publically stated that they wanted to publish it and SE saying that they were re-evaluating the importance of traditionally JRPGs in the wake of Bravely Defaults success, it took until just recently for it to come through.

I can see Nintendo going out of it's way to try to publish it like they are doing with 7 and 8. Personally I have more faith with the new SE after the new CEO took charge.
As I said it really all depends on who will publish the game. If it's Nintendo we will only see the 3DS and maybe NX if that slip up is real. If SE decides to publish it I can see them bring over both. 3DS because games like Bravely Default did well and PS4 because it's a much bigger system in the west.

There's a big list of changes (really big, http://dq-gh.com/dq7/other/ps-3ds.html but I don't want to translate them all). I've also never played the PSX version, but let's see what I can remember off the top of my head:
- No hybrid skill system. The skills exist, but you learn them like anything else now.
- The higher tier abilities don't transfer over when you switch jobs.
- Faster job leveling
- Some new abilities and spells were added apparently, and some old were taken away.
- Lithograph piece detector. Some are apparently easier to find anyway.
- A guide in the Mysterious Shrine who can provide some hints if you're lost.
- The immigrant town is different. There are like, 12-15 humans that were once monsters you recruit for the town. To continue building after that you need to use some online features. Not living in Japan, that was useless to me and I couldn't complete the town.
- There are several times when you're taken to a place you need to go instead of having to walk there yourself.
- Dharma Shrine apparently toned down. I guess you couldn't use magic in there and the place where you get Gabo in the PSX version? There's no restrictions on magic usage in the 3DS version.
And there's a lot of other stuff too, but that's just off the top of my head.

Yeah probably. I didn't grind much. Sometimes when I was inbetween "episodes" and one or more of my characters were really close to maxing their current job, I'd grind a bit so I could start the new area with a new job and not waste any job points, but that's it really. I ended up with everyone having mastered a few classes. Though some characters were close, I never unlocked Godhand though.
For anyone who has played the 3DS version, what's a good level/job grinding spot? I want to unlock the highest classes and take on the optional dungeons eventually.

Oh right, I forgot about that. I remember hearing that you have to go through a long dungeon and solve some puzzles. In the 3DS version you walk into the shrine and end up in a room with four stone tablets talking about the saints. Then you need to go past Gran Estard and go to a new area. Just a place with two stair cases leading down to some items you need for the shrine. You proceed to the next screen which is the same thing, then head back to the shrine, place the items in the correct positions, a door opens and then you're in the tablet room. It only takes like, 10 minutes or something.

Outside of mobile it's been almost 5 years since we got a DQ game. Heroes was the first DQ we got (main or even spinoff) since Joker 2. Not only that but as Heroes was coming out SE was talking about how Heroes (a pseudo musou game) was SE determining if they should release the actual game here.

Anyways just play em yourself and see if you like them. Dragon Quest is basically a simpler/more refined version of the old Ultima/Wizardry style RPGs, usually with a good adventure story and fun characters. And while they haven't changed much over the years the series has subtly improved the gameplay with nearly every game or remake.
Jump in with III, IV, V, the remake of VII coming out soon, or VIII and see if you like it
