Oh god don't remind me.

I guess PoE is the only option for a modern aRPG similar to D1
>>
>>321790561
I always want to get into PoE but it seems like it's very easy to fuck up a character by not making an optimized build in the harder difficulties. Furthest I got was second difficulty Act 2 before I got bored.

Diablo 2?

>>321790561
Grim Dawn.
>>
>>321791073

While Diablo 2 is obviously far superior mechanically, it has a completely different mood than the first. The first game is damn near a horror-themed roguelike, with the non respawning levels and extremely dark atmosphere. Diablo 2 is much closer to a more generic fantasy style.

Diablo 2 and 1 both have very different themes.
Doesn't mean both aren't hella amazing.

Anyone up for some D2 play on USEast? If not I might boot up MedianXl and try that some more.

I forgot how fucking great this game was.
Like ten years later and the mouse-clicking shit to death to this theme still felt good.
>>
Anybody here play the Belzebub mod?
>>
>>321792687

Just started to play it, seems pretty complete.

I was absolutely head over heels in love with it, right up until I realized that the levels respawn now, instead of being permanently mapped and cleared out.

Don't get me wrong, I see why it was a necessary change for gameplay reasons, but goddamn if it doesn't detract significantly from the satisfaction of clearing out a level and moving down to the next.

I appreciate what it's trying to do, but once I realized that, I realized it wasn't a replacement for the first game like I thought it was, but more of a spin-off.

God the music and atmosphere and art was so, for lack of a better word, "Godlike" in both Diablo 1 and 2. Damn near unmatched IMO.

Not that I really know of. It was great traversing a dungeon and continually going down its darkest depths and seeing the hell spawn that came forth and putting it back into its place while trying to position yourself to trap enemies or lure out guys from crowds.

It is a very different game from the modern ARPG which tends to take more inspiration from Diablo 2 and its fast pace.

Just listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8klPYjS3ws
That music describes Diablo 1 perfectly.

I wonder why Dark Fantasy has so little games in the genre. I mean, the obvious one is that they are often filled with scary/disturbing themes that most people don't enjoy playing in. But if you ask me there is nothing more comfy than to traverse a dark dungeon with some atmospheric dark ambient music, not knowing what awaits you behind every corner.

Hexen 2

because most devs are lazy and would rather just opt to make common lcd shit

The first two Doom games definetly belong to that list.

>modern ARPG
Whenever I see exploding shit cluttering the screen like a rave party, I just want to vomit. Not to mention the items.

>Dagger
>Looks like a fucking longsword
>Has numerous spikes on the handle
>Is glowing in a neon light, is on fire, and emits particles in a 20 foot radius
>Dagger
>Also don't forget that it does 640k damage
Holy fuck, my blood pressure right now

What happened to simple and sleek designs, with the damage not going higher than 2 digit numbers? Why does everything have to be flashy like modern JRPGs? What the fuck is wrong with people?

I remember when I first got the Butcher's Cleaver, and was like "Holy shit, this looks fucking awesome!" when I compared it to the sword I had at the time, and it was just a 100x50 sprite in MSPaint of a bloody cleaver with a wooden handle. I would take that over today's shit any day.

All I want is a game with atmosphere like in Diablo, I couldn't care less if the graphics were made in MSPaint

Sometimes I also think itemization went for a turn for the worse. In Diablo 1 you had three tiers, normal, magical, and unique. If you say a blue item drop on the floor you pretty much wanted to pick it up due to how stats can vary wildly. You could find a sword that does 2~7 damage, but due to is magic modifiers it will be doing more damage than your 5~10 damage sword. In other games like Diablo 2 and its clones you would pick up standard magic items at the start of the game because you were equipment starved, but later on you packed on rares, uniques, or sets and eventually there wasn't even a reason to pick up and identify blue magic items. Just more and more of the item pool became useless due to the tiers.
>>
It's been years since I played through Diablo 2. I think it has aged very well.
>>
>>321801498
You have a good point. Itemization has become so broad with the sheer number of different items and stuff. I swear, I would enjoy ARPGs much more if there was like 50-100 items in the whole game tops, but if every item had actual meaning to it rather than being there just for the sake of variety.

Quality > Quantity, I don't know why developers don't understand this.

>>321802087
Yeah, it still looks great

I still have PTSD from fighting the Butcher the first time years ago.

Why is he so fast?

Good sprite art is eternal.

The early 3D games are the ones that aged like milk.
