Yes, just wait for the threads and the hosts. If you want to host yourself make sure that you know how to port forward and have the artifacts unlocked. Pic related is the most common online setup you'll find here, give or take funballs cause casuals hate it.

it's a little confusing at first in /v/ games if you arent used to the artifact setup. play on your own first, unlock stuff, learn the item locations in the chests spawned by the command artifact

There are the same items to divide among more players.
Players can spread out to find TP quicker, so you tend to advance faster, but with fewer items.

I was bored right away, didn't help that everything looks like a blob of random colours. I'm all for that retro pixel art style but when I actually can't tell what anything is supposed to be...you've got an artistic problem.
An example on how to do this right? Terraria. I can tell exactly what something is and is supposed to be right away just by visual feedback...even for a retro pixel game

Not familiar with engi at all.
A few tips for sniper.
You really have to learn to perfect reload while jumping away. Greatly helps you regain some vertical momentum so you can then turn towards the crowd for the shot and repeat.
The charge shot is best combined with the drone. If the first enemy in the crowd is targeted the whole piercing shot will be a critical to all the enemies. This isn't always controllable however since the drone always targets the biggest HP foe.

Bought this game yesterday and been trying to git gud. I can consistently clear the first stage, and sometimes the second. I always end up getting creamed by an overabundance of powerful enemies. I try to clear some space to make a stand, but shit just keeps spawning. What do I do? Also, is it better to advance as quickly as possible to keep the difficulty down, or take your time to gather as much gear as possible?

Usually just rushing to teleport to keep difficulty low is best option. You will get items even if you don't farm.
