I've been interested in this game. My group and I will usually play DayZ together for a weekend whenever there's a big content patch (or its been long enough for there to be new content).

This game definitely looks interesting, but i worry it will be too much minecrafting. Are my worries legit? Or is this worth a shot? Theres about 5 of us in my group.

It's pretty easy to get into desu, I enjoyed the game when it didn't run like absolute dog shit. It's a mixed bag what kind of performance you'll get. It's unplayable on pic related.

As for content, it's fun, tons of dinos to catch, plenty of shit to build. Doesn't take too long to level etc once you get a feel for it. Beware of douchebags on official out ganking newbs tho.

I am currently playing on a private server with 8 other friends. I don't know how to compare this to DayZ because I never played it, but I can say this honestly strikes a chord in enjoyment that I havn't had with any other game for a long time. I got it in the autumn sale and have since sunk around 90-100 hours into it, and I am employed and have been working pretty solidly.

One thing that really stands out with this game is it's severity of loss. You can die over and over in a game and it really dosn't cost you anything except a bit of time. But when you spend 3-4 hours taming a unique dinosaur (that is a fairly light tame) and name it and go on adventures with it, for it only to be ripped away from you by a pack of Direwolfs is harrowing, and really makes you fear for the safety of yourself and your companions.
I don't get that feeling from many games these days. Also it's has some unmatched friend fun moments, but I can't say if they are better than something in DayZ or RUST because as I said, I haven't played them.

Yeah no, that's an old meme now anon, get with the times. Otherwise you need to get your PC checked because i can run it on very high at 50fps give or take on my 970

>>321718043
It's a a solid 7.5/10. Better than the majority of other games in its genre, but like other anons said, it's better with friends (PvE online works too).

Ark is pure RNG for performance, and the devs have admitted that several times. The coming DX12 and other optimizations they claim will bring better performance for a wider variety of builds.

It's the best early access survival game. Also includes dinosaurs. I put about 100 hours into and enjoyed myself. Obviously better with friends but not bad alone. Play on a PVE server.

I'm being dead serious here. I put in ~100 hours (I'm lying because it was more) in a matter of ~3 weeks (it may have been less than this). I had to stop playing because it was becoming a problem. The weird thing is, everyone else who was playing was doing the same damn thing. It really was like living in a different world.

You don't need friends at all. You make them in-game. Even if you don't, there's still tons of solo players with their own little property who are active members of the overall communities. You get very used to seeing these people every day and you become like bona fide neighbors.

It's fun as fuck especially with friends, but avoid the Official servers as Ark is mixed with one of the worst fanbases I've ever encountered. Find someone hosting their own server in the steam forums and join one that sounds good to you. (PVE,PVP, 3x taming speed, etc,)

Since the Winter Wonderland event is happening the cold weather will kill you a lot at the beginning.

Have been keeping an eye on this because scifi theme looks more fun than random caveman building M16s. But they just got multiplayer & still hasn't expanded its map. Will have to wait and see how it's rated later this year when more people get into it.
>>
>>321726450
Ark devs give more of a fuck than any other devs I've seen. Major update come every few days. I have no idea how they can pump out so much work so quickly. And every one of these updates in "minor" in their eyes. The game world is constantly evolving.
>>
>>321727393
I'm not disappointed. Picked it up in the sale and have been trying to break it since. Outside of primitive AI and some texturing, it's already a solid game. Just waiting for them to add the other biomes and fix mp servers.
>>
>>321724676
>Being this butthurt that the game you play has less players and is uttershit.

If you're going to play a shit game, you might as well play the least shittiest in the genre; ARK.
>>
So if I have no one to play this with should I avoid it?
I did pretty well with Minecraft solo long ago when it was still in beta.
Is solo viable at all for $18?
>>
>>321729480
Solo is viable to an extent. If you want a big base solo you'll have to play PvE or on your own server/offline. If you want to PK the shit out of people though you can easily have fun terrorizing tribes.

Solo players stick to small bases that act more like storage closets & very few if any tamed dinosaurs. Your levels will come a bit slower since tribes share there's, but you can get to cap or close within a couple of weeks if you're dedicated. As you get there you stock up your resources & stash them in different areas inside 1x1 metal containers near indestructible landscape & later cheaper materials around them. Or get creative with underwater boxes and the like. The last one I did was built under water, but attached to a glacier near a Chinese base. Stock the tribe players until they're alone or fighting something tough, then gun them down & loot the corpses.
>>
>>321729480
If you don't mind then yeah go for it.

The real killer is how shitty RANDOMS and long seated groups tend to behave on official servers.

For example. I hopped on a new server after failing to really get started several times. Everyone initially seems friendly, they help me get situation near their base on a cliff just in view of theirs.

I proceed to be robbed/murdered while logged off for two weeks repeatedly making the same shit and repairing my from the raids. They pretty much would just bust the door down. Regardless I moved up to stone construction, had a lot of resources readily available in my home like running water. And I built plenty of spikes and other defenses to keep dinosaurs out and people unless their mid-late game.

Actually felt like I was getting shit under control and could maybe actually start having fun and not just fucking grind out the same shit repeatedly.

Then I log in after not doing so for 3 days due to work and someone had destroyed every last bit of my home. Not a fucking thing was left, I was told a bigger group in the game had just came through and basically fucked all the newbie players shit up, gathered what they could, and left nothing.

So long story short play with friends on a private server until they actually have anything last against grieving and large established tribes.
>>
>>321732264
>Regardless I moved up to stone construction, had a lot of resources readily available in my home like running water. And I built plenty of spikes and other defenses to keep dinosaurs out and people unless their mid-late game.

This is what not to do if you're a solo player. Track down some Plant Species X seeds & grow it on top of your base if you need facilities to craft. A pack of them will live fine off of rain water & will require actual effort to kill, fertilizer lasts for weeks. You still want to store your valuables in multiple hidden points so the butthole who does break in feels like he wasted his time & any potentially dead tames.
>>
>>321730434
Man, that just sounds like a struggle.
>>
>>321732264
Fuck pvp servers, I will never touch one of those. Now that pve tribes are going to be able to (or already can?) declare war on each other there' s no reason to deal with pvp servers bullshit anymore.

Really fun game with a lot of potential. Runs like ass though, and this winter event snow everywhere is a pain in the ass if you are starting fresh.
>>
>>321733849
You're playing solo on a PvP server in a team based game, of course it's a struggle.
>>
>>321725634
Seconding this, with friends it can be a good waste of time but avoid Official Servers like the plague. You're bound for a bad experience on them and Wild Card doesn't seem to give a about the current state of affairs regarding them; main thing being blatant hacking.
>>
>>321726450
The problem with Eden Star is the static map and the dated assets. They should have finished gameplay before making art assets that now quickly age and look old. There's also a severe lack of content as of yet. It's simply not worth a recommendation and nobody should buy games on promises alone.
>>
The only time i or any other person should consider getting it is when direct x 12 hits, because then it might actually be playable.
>>
>>321722134

You can join a server that has increased tame speed and xp gain. But yes, it's still a terrible time sink, just learning the game takes forever.
>>
No.

It's completely unoptimized.

There's tons of rubberbanding lag all over the place.

Dino balance is completely fucked.

The map is too small.

Taming takes so long you basically have to be a no-life faggot in order to go through with it.
>>
Bit over 200 hours each in both Ark and Rust.

Both are only fun with friends who are used to survival games with setup times and not instant drop in PvP.
