Just my opinion:
The first Silent Hill movie is a decent horror film. It's impossible to get a consistent rating or meta score regarding horror because almost no reviewers like or understand horror because it's generally a more complex genre to excel at than what's covered in intro to film 101.
I wouldn't call it a great horror film, but it's a solid B grade. It does very well with handling the atmosphere and obfuscating the monsters/visuals. The lighting is masterfully handled.
The Resident Evil movies are all also good-bad movies. The first one is the only one that approaches being an actually decent movie on it's own right. The rest are so fucking absurd and full of insane action schlock that they are enjoyable as fuck to watch.
I'm a big fan of both the SH and RE games and I feel like some people just have a violent reaction when the movies aren't carbon copies of the games. They tried to do that in RE2 and it was the worst of the franchise.
